What Do Millennials Want In Their Physical Workplace?

According to Gallup, millennials are the least engaged generation in the workplace @ 55% and are fast becoming the driving force behind workplace change. In their relatively short time as employees, millennials have led the charge to break down traditional structures and policies and have pushed companies to rethink their work environments.

By 2025, Millennials will make up 75% of the workforce, which is why smart organisations are now prioritising how to better understand their mindset to stay ahead of the curve, with location strategies, employee experience programs, and workplace design rapidly changing to remain competitive. Millennials are known to shop around for jobs that best align with their needs and life goals, with the ‘workplace experience’ high on the priority list.

So, what do millennials want in the workplace? Plenty it seems.

Here, we’ve listed what millennials typically seek in a workplace environment, though it's important to note that there is no 'one size fits all' approach.

FLEXIBLE FREEDOM

Flexible Workspaces: Millennials prefer adaptable spaces that allow for both collaboration and focused work. They like environments where they can choose between open areas, private offices, or even standing desks depending on the task.

Remote Work Options: Even within a physical office, they value the ability to occasionally work remotely or have flexible hours.

What Do Millennials Want In Their Physical Workplace?

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION, THAT IS SMART!

High-Tech Facilities: Millennials expect modern offices to be equipped with the latest technology, such as fast Wi-Fi, video conferencing tools, and smart office systems.

Collaboration Tools: Access to digital collaboration tools that make teamwork easier, like shared digital whiteboards and project management software, is highly valued.

WORK/ LIFE BALANCE ALL THE WAY

Health and Wellness: Features like on-site gyms, wellness programs, healthy snack options, and spaces for relaxation (e.g., meditation rooms) are attractive to millennials.

Natural Light and Green Spaces: Offices that incorporate natural light, indoor plants, or outdoor spaces like terraces or gardens resonate well with this group.

COMMUNITY & CULTURE (BRO!)

Social Spaces: Millennials appreciate social spaces like lounges, coffee bars, and communal kitchens that foster interaction and a sense of community.

Collaborative Environment: A culture that encourages teamwork, open communication, and inclusivity is important. Physical spaces that support these values, like open-plan offices or transparent meeting rooms, are favoured.

Expression of Company Culture: The physical office should reflect the company's values and culture, making the space feel like an extension of the team’s identity.

SUSTAINABILITY IS A DEAL BREAKER

Eco-Friendly Design: Millennials are particularly conscious of environmental impact. They prefer offices with sustainable practices, such as energy-efficient lighting, recycling programs, and sustainable building materials.

Environmental Responsibility: A company’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint is a significant factor in their satisfaction with the workspace.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

Convenient Location: Offices located near cafes, gyms, and other amenities are appealing. Millennials enjoy the convenience of having everything they need within walking distance.

Commuting Options: Easy access to public transportation, bike storage, and parking facilities are also important considerations.

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION OR I'M OUT

Transparent and Inclusive Leadership: Offices designed with transparent layouts (e.g., glass walls) can symbolize an open-door policy and encourage approachable leadership, which is key for fostering an inclusive culture.

Diverse Meeting Spaces: Offering a variety of meeting spaces that accommodate different group sizes and purposes, from formal meetings to casual hangouts, ensures that everyone’s communication styles and needs are respected.

Inclusive Design: Offices should be designed to accommodate everyone, including those with disabilities. This includes features like ramps, wide doorways, adjustable desks, and accessible restrooms.

LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES - WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME?

Learning Spaces: Millennials value spaces within the office dedicated to learning and development, such as libraries, training rooms, or areas for workshops and seminars.

IN SUMMARY - ADAPT & REAP THE REWARDS These preferences underline a broader trend towards creating office environments that are as functional as supportive of holistic well-being, collaboration, and a strong sense of community. With 6/10 millennials currently looking for a new job, they are a flight risk more than any other generation, making it vital for organizations to understand how to engage and retain these employees. On the flip side, millennials’ enthusiasm to find better opportunities means businesses must enhance their attraction or recruitment strategies – with the workplace experience playing an important role.
